Barthe's fashion system is seperated into 3 different categories...
1. Literal representation:
The catalogue shot displaying the garment. This can be compared to still life photography, product photography or portraiture.
2. Romanticized:
Fashion becomes referential, a story where real life becomes art. This can be compared to cinematography, reportage photography and motion photography.
3. Mockery:
An outrageous situation that uses unreal juxtapositions. (Unlike the previous there is no romance or reason but total absurdity). This can be compared to fine art photography, conceptual photography and mixed-media photography,
Possible combinations of the above:
Mixture of 1 and 2 (Literal+Romance)
The models present the garment but also are in a faux scenario.
Mixture of 1 and 2 and 2 (Literal+Romantic+Mockery)
Clothing is shown literally, the editorial is staged, romanticized, but with a bit of over the top emphasis that mocks a genuine reality.
